Critical for the operation of industrial machinery, an AC motor is an electric motor driven by an alternating current (AC). Routinely constructed in the form of two primary parts, AC motors consist of an exterior stator and an internal rotor. Affixed with coils that are supplied with an alternating current, it is imperative that stators generate a rotating magnetic field. Meanwhile, the rotor can be attached to an output shaft to produce a secondary magnetic field. Creating rotational motion to supply various equipment with power, AC motors are essential for converting alternating currents into mechanical energy.
Based on one’s particular needs and requirements, there are different types of AC motors available to suit various functions ranging from employment in industrial motion control systems to rotating fans, pump impellers, blowers, drive compressors, and more. Further improving their diversity, AC motors are obtainable in two types—those with synchronous motors and those with induction motors. Contingent on rotor rotational speeds, synchronous motors provide reactive power equal to their current frequency input, whereas induction motors rotate at lower speeds in comparison to their input frequency.
While the primary components constructing AC motors consist of stationary parts like the stator, the rotor can rotate to facilitate rotation whenever the motor is active. Fundamentally, AC motors work by employing two conductors, each of which are individually implemented within the stator and rotor. When affixed in the stator, a conductor uses the magnetic field produced by alternating current to produce electromagnetism. This energy supply will then pass through coils lining the stator’s interior, resulting in a rotating magnetic flux that is meant to reach the rotor. Subsequently coming in contact with a rotor conductor, the magnetic flux will interact with the component to create a current.
In addition to a stator and rotor, AC motors are also composed of broader accessories which aid in their construction. Such parts include: an enclosure, bearings, terminal box, fan, and eyebolt. Protecting parts while assisting in heat dissipation, the enclosure serves the vital role of ensuring that all internal accessories are securely held together. Meanwhile, the terminal box houses the connection where an electrical power supply can be connected to the motor.
Uncommon among the primary types of AC motors is the AC linear motor. Similar in operation to standard AC motors, AC linear motors incorporate stationary and moving parts, but establish them along a straight line in lieu of utilizing rotational motion. Resulting in a direct drive linear electric motor designed to produce linear force, AC linear motors are devoid of pneumatic and hydraulic cylinders typically needed in similar machinery. Like their rotary counterparts, linear motors are also supplied in different types for AC, DC, and Stepper currents.
