What are THHN and TFFN Wires?
When purchasing wires, it may be difficult to understand the difference between THHN (Thermoplastic High Heat Resistant Nylon) and TFFN (Thermoplastic Flexible Fixture Nylon) wires. Both THHN and TFFN wires are considered building wires, and this means that they are used in the construction of commercial, residential, and industrial buildings to serve electrical applications. Building wires are also manufactured to meet specifications and requirements as set out by the National Electrical Code (NEC). While both THHN and TFFN are used to create building wiring infrastructure, their purposes are somewhat different.
A
THHN wire is a building wire that is constructed from thermoplastic materials that are encapsulated within a nylon jacket. They contain a single copper conductor, and have a heat rating of 90 degrees Celsius in dry areas, and 75 degrees in wet areas. They also are manufactured in sizes such as 14 AWG and 1000 MCM. Additionally, they feature resistance to oil and gas and are rated up to 600 volts. TFFN wires are also thermoplastic materials that have a nylon jacket, but they are also greatly flexible. The TFFN wire has a copper core that can be 16 to 18 AWG, and they also feature a heat rating of 90 degrees Celsius for dry areas. Other similarities to THHN wires include 600 volt rating, resistance to oil and gas, and
PVC insulation.
With their specifications spelled out, it can still be a little difficult to find how they are very different. In all, their differences are minor; THHN wires have more heat resistance in wet environments due to their size, and TFFN wires feature flexibility. TFFN wires are also used for fixtures while THHN cannot. Meanwhile, only THHN can be used for
branch circuits. In the end, based on their different specifications and ratings that the NEC has set, they have their varying uses and functionality. When choosing between the two wires, it is then important to consider the application and needs so that the correct wire is chosen based on technicalities.
