What are THHN and TFFN Wires?

A THHN wire is a building wire that is constructed from thermoplastic materials that are encapsulated within a nylon jacket. They contain a single copper conductor, and have a heat rating of 90 degrees Celsius in dry areas, and 75 degrees in wet areas. They also are manufactured in sizes such as 14 AWG and 1000 MCM. Additionally, they feature resistance to oil and gas and are rated up to 600 volts. TFFN wires are also thermoplastic materials that have a nylon jacket, but they are also greatly flexible. The TFFN wire has a copper core that can be 16 to 18 AWG, and they also feature a heat rating of 90 degrees Celsius for dry areas. Other similarities to THHN wires include 600 volt rating, resistance to oil and gas, and PVC insulation.

With their specifications spelled out, it can still be a little difficult to find how they are very different. In all, their differences are minor; THHN wires have more heat resistance in wet environments due to their size, and TFFN wires feature flexibility. TFFN wires are also used for fixtures while THHN cannot. Meanwhile, only THHN can be used for branch circuits.
