Particular in design for their shape and application, spring pins are unthreaded fasteners that must be inserted into a hole with a diameter that is smaller than the pin itself. Also commonly referred to as roll pins, these components are built with an open seam down their length, allowing for a snug fit once placed. Manufactured with a chamfer on each end to facilitate easy insertion into a hole, spring pins are typically made from thin sheet metal meant to decrease in diameter and curve to form the outer expansion of the pin. Available in two primary pin types, slotted pins and spiral pins, these mechanical fasteners are the perfect solution for mating parts together or fastening one shaft to another. To better understand how spring pins work, we will discuss their common types and how you can best apply each to satisfy your part needs.
Slotted Pins
Curving no more than 360 degrees around the cylindrical circumference of a pin once inserted, slotted pins are designed to leave a gap for a pin to compress and secure itself within a hole. Relying on compression to hold itself in place, slotted pins are best used in light-duty applications where part rigidity is absolutely necessary. Also known as roll pins, “C” pins, or sellok pins, slotted pins can be made from a single sheet of material most suitable for an application.
Spiral Pins
In comparison to slotted pins, spiral pins are often lighter in gauge to produce a pin that is efficient at retaining a flexible shape. Capable of curving around itself in multiple revolutions, spiral pins work to mitigate part stress and fatigue which can ultimately lead to part failure. Recommended for use in heavy-duty applications where cyclic loading is necessary, spiral pins can also be found in three different duties such as light duty (ISO 8751), standard (ISO 8750), and heavy (ISO 8748). For promoted variation in part diameter, flexibility, and strength, spiral pins can be made from materials such as high carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy 6150. Examples of applied spiral pins in action include: usage for automotive door handles and locks, latches as hinge pins, pivots, axles, alignment and stopping mechanisms, parts to fasten multiple components together, and much more.
As a last case scenario, if any type of spring pin is not immediately available to be of service, groove pins and cotters can be used as a substitute. Similar in application to spring pins, grooved pins and cotters must be forced into a hole smaller than the pin’s diameter. Often accompanied by the need for additional force upon insertion, both supplemental fastener types also pose the risk of damaging a hole from exerted shear stress.
