Cable Assemblies: What To Know
A cable assembly is essentially a transmitter that connects devices in a wide range of ways. The cable assembly emits electrical signals via an internal conductor (commonly copper) which is subsequently insulated with dielectric materials, before being wrapped in shielding and coated with a plastic cover. Cable assemblies are popular due to their limited signal loss and degradation, both of which make them very efficient transmitters of signals.
There are seven primary types of
cable assemblies: hard line, radiating, RG-6, Triaxial, Twin Axial, Semi-rigid, and rigid line. Hard line cables are used for broadcasting and radio communication. These cables need to withstand harsh conditions, and usually have special connections. Radiating cables are similar to hard line cables, with the exception of small slots cut into the surrounding tubing. Each slot provides a different frequency bandwidth. The RG-6 cable is intended for use around the house. Different versions of this cable carry out many different functions, making it very diverse.
Triaxial cables are normal cables that feature a third layer of shielding, protecting the inner wires from electromagnetic interference. Twin axial cables allow for multiple conductors within the same shield, also creating excellent signal transference. The semi-rigid and rigid line cables are simply cables that have minimal or zero bending capabilities. These are usually found in higher
power transmission applications.
There are many benefits of using different cable assemblies. They give you the ability to prototype and test assemblies, which helps reduce the costs associated with deficiencies caused by imperfect cable configurations. Additionally, the myriad of options each user has allows them to find the cable most perfectly suited to their setup. In turn, this allows faster turnaround time on projects while simultaneously ensuring quality of work. Experienced cable manufacturers in particular will be sure to provide customers with better cable materials, give users the ability to scale production, and provide them with control over the process of cable assembly setup.
